Substances & Energy

One of the biggest challenges facing the energetically sensitive is finding (and maintaining) a sense of equilibrium.  How this manifests depends on what’s occurring; a person’s specific profile; and his/her lifestyle choices.  “Just” waking up; going to study or work; heading to the shops; or out to socialise can open a person up to energetic extras which some people experience loudly (and others do not).

Whilst the above, in itself, represents a major discourse on how intuitive phenomena affect people, this page focuses on the impact of substances – ie, recreational drugs and alcohol.  Other websites also delve into this (you’re encouraged to visit them).  What’s written below isn’t born out of a moral stance; it’s an energetic perspective that highlights the need to “do it with awareness”.  Energy is real and, for some people, there are energetic ramifications in every choice they make.  The paragraphs below hold a few thoughts about this, to help you make sense of such experiences.

The energetic realm is full of layers
Many authors have outlined the structure of the world of energy (a place of psychic phenomena, emotional and thought waves, and beings).   The energetic realm also includes Divine energies that can heal and spiritually guide people.  Irrespective of labels, the world of energy is full of layers, with every row of atoms having a specific resonance.  The higher one goes, the lighter and more balanced and peaceful the “vibes” become.  Humans live amongst the lower levels (not necessarily the lowest) and what’s encountered is influenced by our lifestyle; beliefs; and how we process life.

The lower levels are often referred to as the astral or egoic realm.  This part of the world of energy includes electromagnetic, mental and emotional frequencies (eg, mind, neediness, opinion, pessimism).  The astral layer also contains beings, ghosts, lost souls and other self-focused energies.  Divine energies also exist within these layers, scattered amongst the egoic “I”, “me” and “my”.  Lower-level energies can interfere with our ability to remain connected with (and channelling) the higher frequencies.  They can also promote a sense of isolation, separateness, aloneness and limited or negative thinking.  Whenever one becomes imbued with lower-level vibrations, she tends to feel less connected to his/her essential self.  This can heighten the tendency to become caught up in (and begin channelling) astral energies more.

The lower levels are where ‘negative’ influence exist
There are all sorts of things in the world of energy, irrespective of the level involved.  Lower-level beings and energetic phenomena frequently resonate with a lack of (non-religious) faith.  It’s not that every entity in this zone is “bad”, but they tend to be more lost, self-focused or needy.  They’ve yet to fulfil their spiritual journey (this life) partly because they haven’t released opinion or fear.  This can result from noble intentions (eg, concern for the living) or because they’re scared of fully releasing.  It can also occur because they don’t yet realise where they are or how to pass over (eg, people who die suddenly).

There are also energies which are definitely ‘naughty’ and seem only interested in creating dissonance.  This group doesn’t tend to trust (100%) that the Divine is real, benevolent and most powerful.  ‘Naughty’ energies might know how to connect with Source but, because of their issues, they actively choose/prefer not to.  Instead they tend to hang about and influence humans and spaces, sometimes quite noticeably.

The lower levels are also where our lack of faith, opinion and fear is
The realm of “negative influence” tends to hang about most with humans who don’t connect to Source (100%) either.  This includes many of us, at least some of the time – the human tendency to avoid processing difficult “stuff” can distract us.  Excessive use of technology; not balancing back to peace; too much alcohol, sugar or drugs can also affect one’s vibes.  Such things, in excess (whatever amount that is), can attract lower-level vibrations and magnify egoic states.  The frequencies of such activities are closely aligned with astral energies and tend to heighten one’s identification with the egoic realm.  In extreme cases, they also attract ghosts/beings who latch onto their human and stay for a while.

Like attracts like in the world of energy
The paragraphs above are further explained by the law of attraction – ie, “what you experience or attract tends to result from what you emit or focus upon”.  In the world of energy, “like atoms attract like atoms” – ie, we tend to end up in states that resemble what we embrace and allow (intentionally or not).  This appears to be the universe’s way of magnifying spiritual issues so that they’re noticed and addressed.  Energetically and spiritually, this is “development”: ie, becoming more aware of and responsible for our life choices.

The person who’s “over-doing” alcohol or recreational drugs is often driven by egoic needs and opinions.  This isn’t a criticism – addiction is never easy (irrespective of the circumstances).  What tends to create the extra, energetic challenge is that, as a bundle of atoms, the imbiber is more in self-interest (but not always aware of that).  This, in itself, can attract more addictive, self-focused and mind-full experiences.  There’s usually enough of these vibes at any time; alcohol and substances only help them grow.  Over time, attachments magnify our egoic tendencies and heighten those stances that need resolving.  As lower level influence increases, a person’s thoughts, feelings and (re-)actions can become very “negative”.

The places where people consume alcohol and recreational substances also tend to attract lower-level energies.  Such venues aren’t always proactively cleared (ie, energetically, of all lower-level vibrations).  This can see the amount or calibre of astral energies there increasing in extremeness over time.  Going to a club or pub can find anyone entering a space that’s full of physical and invisible crowds.  Egoic/astral energies tend to like socialising; they’re often keen to interact and not only with consumers.  Nor are they anchored to any one venue – they readily go home with whomever they resonate well with.  They can attach to their human quite strongly and go on to affect that person’s moods, thoughts and behaviour long term.  Such vibes can also be sensed (and affect) other people around that individual.

Have you ever noticed how some people, near a bottle or substance, change the moment it comes into play?  Well-entrenched addicts noticeably shift the moment such ideas are mentioned – the energies they’re with are so entrenched and powerful.  This is easily sensed by those who are energetically sensitive and straight, on visual, audio or felt levels.  It can play out loudly via the addict’s words, non-verbal gestures or behaviour.  All energies love being the centre of attention, with addictive vibes opening the forum up for any performance.  This is why some people’s behaviour shifts so markedly when harder drugs or alcohol feature (even in small talk).

The lower levels are the loudest
An unfortunate thing about the lower levels of energy is that the frequencies they emit tend to be loud ones.  Not all lower levels work at “100 decibels” though – amoebic entities work quite quietly (ie, until they’re challenged).  This said, egoic level energies can be easily sensed by an energetically-sensitive person.  This where alcohol and recreational substances can play havoc with such people, whether they’re consuming or not

Entering a zone that’s heavy with egoic, mental or technological energies (ie, in imbalance) is like moving from peace into a heavy metal concert.  Intuitively, egoic frequencies can be heard as more silent noise or chatter; seen as ghosts, colours, etc; or felt as discomfort or tension.  Each of these experiences can be subtle or extreme, and manifest in “nice” or unpleasant ways.  Loud lower-level energies can really distress an intuit, to the point of physical pain.  In extreme cases, one can only rebalance by leaving the scenario (sometimes permanently).  Extremely egoic energies/stances, when channelled by those who embrace them, can play out as really needy or schizoid.  Energetically-sensitive people can react to lower-level vibes in much the same way as a person with food allergies.  Such frequencies can be sensed before they physically start mingling with them.  This is why and how one can come unstuck, because we tend to energetically represent (ie, resonate with) the states and vibes we choose to sit amongst (even if we don’t want to).  It can take months, even years, to clear from lower-level dynamics, even if one was stone, cold sober.

Again, do it with awareness
As mentioned above, this page is not moralising; it is about energetic phenomena and how they can manifest.  It’s not so much a case of “don’t do it” but “do it with awareness”, especially if you experience invisible phenomena.  This is particularly the case for sentients (people who feel “things”) because they tend to have the biggest discernment challenge.  If you see or hear “something”, you often know that it’s not you (where a sentient can need to process what s/he senses as his/hers at first, in order to understand it and act accordingly).

When egoic energies are loud, the energetically-sensitive person is advised to examine what they’re entertaining at work, in relationships, and how they manage life, stress, etc.  The philosophy of “turn the other cheek” can trap energetically-sensitive people in the “wrong” vibrations.  Energetic sensitivity isn’t about being judgmental or cruel, but it does require healthy boundaries.  Test these opinions but, if you feel “odd” after a night out “there” or too much of him, her or “that”, this is worth examining.  It could be you, them, the place, the food, the substances; it may be the fact that you haven’t had a decent break.  Resolving such issues is step-by-step, often helped with fresh air and exercise.  Lower-level energies don’t only target imbibers; they often make themselves known by targeting their companions.  This is often the energetically-sensitive person because s/he can dialogue with (ie, notice) them.

How much is too much?
This is a question we have to address individually – there’s no one answer (although some would say, “any at all”).  The consumption or allowance of addictive stances seems to hit children, indigenous people, older people, those taking medication and females the hardest.  If you combine any of these factors, the intensity of the energetic experience tends to increase again.

From what I understand, indigenous people are often hit hard by substances taken in any volume.  From an energetic perspective, this is due to their affiliation with the land (as well as sky).  Being more spiritually bound to earth and nature, they can be more affected by energies at that level.  This does not mean that indigenous peoples practise a lower level of spirituality (far from it!).

In young adults (ie, amongst moderate users), the energies of drugs and alcohol don’t always play out severely.  This doesn’t mean they don’t manifest at all, but young people often bounce better.  Obviously, one needs to consider the substance involved – eg, beer is softer than spirit; ice worse than dope.  With age, the person who ingests “too much” over time (for him/her) becomes less able to process it fully.  In this sense, the human body is an energetic sponge which energies build up and entrench themselves in over time.  As s/he ages, a person can need a lesser amount of any stimulus before lower-level energies begin manifesting loudly.

Prescribed medication can also affect one’s ability to (fully) process astral-level vibrations.  This is widely known (hence the warnings about drug and alcohol consumption on many medicines).  On the energetic level, medicines can weaken one’s aura, making him/her susceptible to lower-level energies.  This can see him/her becoming inebriated/bent more rapidly and see the energies she channels becoming more extreme.

Gender is also a factor because, energetically, the female is the absorber (the vessel that receives and generates more life energy).  Combine this with age, medication, drugs or alcohol, older females can get hit the hardest.  That’s not to say that such things don’t play through men or young people – energetic sensitivity can manifest in either gender.  How it manifests depends upon a number of things (including one’s energetic/intuitive profile).

What if I’m energetically sensitive and don’t partake at all?
Energetic awareness or sensitivity doesn’t remove anyone from the possibility of lower-level influence.  One can witness/sense lower-level energies anywhere (eg, work spaces, homes, even shopping centres).  Each person (and situation) is unique; there’s no one answer, but it’s worth noting that the lower levels are where lost and troubled souls reside.  These frequencies get help by attracting the attention of people they sense they can dialogue with.  This often involves the energetically-sensitive person (because s/he is intuitive).  Yet such scenarios are often facilitated by other, less-sensitive or -aware people.  This seems to be one of the ways that Source ensures a level of care that carries beyond the self.

The state of lost souls was once described to me as being in a room with no lights on.  Spirit hangs about because it’s missed the “exit door”, and it’s usually pleased when someone turns a light on.  In the world of energy, the “light bulb” is often a child, addicted or energetically-sensitive person.  Whether s/he wants this or not, having “seen the light”, lost souls approach him/her to dialogue.  The purpose of this is to gain attention and, thereby, resolve a spiritual issue.  As soon as that’s done, lower-level energies tend to shift and leave the zone (and person) they’ve been in (or with).  Sometimes naughty; sometimes negative; such energies can be cleared by witnessing their reasons for being lost.  This isn’t too difficult but it can see an energetically-sensitive person out of kilter or overwhelmed.  The astral layers manifest in various ways and there’s no way of predicting how they will unfold.  Sooner or later, imbalance tends to release – it’s just a matter of how long and what occurs in the meantime.

The interpersonal reality of substances and energy
For those who sense energetic phenomena easily, the frequencies of alcohol and substances can be very loud.  As a result, the energetically-sensitive person can need to avoid gatherings where such things are consumed.  Less sensitive people don’t always understand this, even if one tries to explain it.  This can stress relationships – unless a person’s energetically sensitive, understanding can be elusive.

When one person partakes in substances and the other doesn’t, it can be hard to find a genuine meeting point.  If the former imbibes to subdue his/her issues, s/he can become quite defensive about such discussions.  Sometimes this occurs because what you experience isn’t real (ie, evident) to him/her.  No matter how well you explain it, there may only so much some people might hear or work with you.  If this is your experience, you may have to find other ways to socialise (ie, without substances).  With “luck”, you’ll be supported and your network will work with you.  Ego being ego, this doesn’t always happen.

None of the above should be used to egoically reject others because they choose to live differently.  If however, other people can’t/won’t honour your needs, you may need to draw boundaries or relate with them in other ways.  Relationships are supposed to be two-way dynamics, where all players matter, equally and fairly.  If the shoe were on the other foot, such things would be asked of you, too, and no one is supposed to carry the loads of others into the long-term.  In such scenarios, everyone has to own and process his/her stuff healthily.  This can be a huge lesson for energetically-sensitive people because “like attracts like” in the world of energy.  If you make like a porter or doormat, the world of energy will often uphold that.  Don’t believe me blindly – make sure you test these perspectives – but do “it” with awareness and in balance is often the spiritual lesson.

The lower realms encourage balance
You know, one huge positive about energetic sensitivity is its tendency to promote healthy and honest lifestyles.  Whether you partake of substances (alcohol or not), lower-level energetic experiences tend to highlight what you’re entertaining, too.  There’s always a positive spiritual lesson in invisible challenge; activities that magnify the astral layers (ultimately) promote balanced living.  We may not always like what this means in practice, but this is each individual’s issue to work through.  The world is full of mind, astral and egoic phenomena – it’s part of being human (like it or not).  Yet the challenge is to not overly worship such states, with for some, can require a different lifestyle; for others, “just” the need for more discipline.  You’ll know which route applies in your world; we’re all intuitive (and learning how to live with that).
